The hard work that it takes to build or enhance a web or mobile application is broken down into many different pieces, tasks and milestones. Generally someone dreams up an idea or is put in charge of building someone else's idea and they begin documenting the requirements.
Buzz words are used in nearly every aspect of this process, but, in general things can be summarized into the following; write up what it needs to do, write up what it needs to look and feel like being mindful of your intended audience or users; write up why it needs to do things so that everyone understands better; figure out who should be in charge of building it and then begin building. If you have also focused on how to recoup your costs and actually make money on the work then you are on the right path.
There are lots and lots of theories, styles, approaches and methods to build something, but, they all share some commonalities.
